Unlike the Northern Circuit, western Tanzania cannot be planned by assuming a vehicle will connect the parks in a few hours. Katavi has expansive floodplains and seasonal concentrations of wildlife, while Mahale is approached via Lake Tanganyika and focuses on ranger-guided chimpanzee trekking. Forest paths can be steep, and the walk may be short or demanding depending on where the chimpanzees are. We prepare these routes only after air and lodge operators provide a workable schedule.
Ten-day itinerary: where you travel and sleep
This is a sample route to help you decide whether the trip suits your dates. Accommodation names, transport sectors and park activity times are final only after availability is checked and the itinerary is confirmed in writing.
Day 1 — Arrival at the confirmed western-safari gateway
We meet you at Arusha or Dar es Salaam, depending on the operating air route, and arrange a hotel. Take this evening to check soft-luggage weight, medications and the flight schedule. A long-distance bush flight should not be assumed after an international arrival.

Day 2 — Fly to Katavi National Park
Use the confirmed regional or charter aircraft routing to Katavi. The operator may use intermediate stops. Meet the local safari team and enjoy an afternoon game drive if arrival time permits.

Day 3 — Katavi floodplain wildlife
Explore the plains and river systems with the resident guide. Hippos, buffalo, antelope and predators may be seen according to the season and water levels. Midday rest is useful in the heat; a walking safari is offered only if the park and lodge permit it.

Day 4 — Second full day in Katavi
Spend more time in a productive area rather than chasing a long list of animals. Ask the lodge which activities are included and whether an afternoon drive or guided walk is feasible. Remote safari quality comes from time in the habitat.

Day 5 — Travel toward Kigoma
Leave Katavi using the actual flight or charter connection confirmed for your dates. There may be stops or a change of aircraft; a direct daily service should never be assumed. If the air schedule reaches Kigoma late, sleep there rather than making an unsafe same-day boat connection.

Day 6 — Boat or approved transfer to Mahale
Travel from Kigoma toward the booked Mahale lodge using the agreed boat or other lodge-operated route. Lake Tanganyika conditions can alter departure times. The rest of the day is for settling in and receiving the park and chimp-trekking briefing.

Day 7 — First ranger-guided chimp trek
Walk with authorised guides in Mahale’s forest to search for chimpanzees. The walk can involve heat, humidity, slopes and uneven ground. Follow current rules for distance, masks, time near the animals and illness restrictions. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Day 8 — Mahale forest or second trek
Where permits and conditions allow, a second trek gives another opportunity for chimpanzee observation. Alternatively explore forest birds and lakeshore scenery with a local guide. Never approach chimpanzees when unwell.

Day 9 — Return to Kigoma
Take the scheduled lodge boat transfer back across the lake with enough margin for weather. Stay near the onward airport so there is no pressure to connect a delayed boat directly to a flight.

Use the confirmed domestic flight and airport transfer. If the only available air service leaves on another day, Capable will propose a revised trip length and price before taking a deposit.
