What to expect on this safari

Combine game drives, river scenery and a forest hike in one southern Tanzania journey. Over five days you visit Nyerere, Mikumi and the Udzungwa Mountains, with one long transfer day and a physically active final section.

The plan below is a sample itinerary. Exact departure times, lodge names, park permissions and included services will be confirmed in a written quotation before you make a payment.

Three landscapes in one itinerary

Nyerere offers varied woodland and water habitats, Mikumi is more open and familiar as a vehicle safari landscape, and Udzungwa is a humid mountain forest reached on foot. The attraction is this contrast. It also means packing for hot game drives and potentially wet, steep walking trails.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Nyerere

Leave Dar es Salaam early for the Nyerere area. Settle into the chosen accommodation. If road arrival and local conditions allow, enjoy a boat excursion on the Rufiji system when it is listed in the booking. This activity is never forced into unsafe river conditions or poor light.

Day 2: Full day in Nyerere

Spend the day exploring accessible habitats in a 4x4, stopping where there is recent animal activity. Wildlife can be dispersed, and long drives across the park are not always worthwhile. A packed lunch helps you remain flexible before returning to camp.

Day 3: Overland transfer to Mikumi

Travel toward Mikumi with necessary rest stops. Depending on road condition and the exact lodge locations, this can be the longest transfer day of the trip. An evening or afternoon game drive is possible only if daylight and park operations permit; it should not be assumed to be a full game-viewing day.

Day 4: Mikumi wildlife and Udzungwa transfer

Use the morning to look for elephants, giraffes, buffalo and other plains wildlife, then travel toward the Udzungwa foothills. Rest in the afternoon or evening, organise walking shoes and water, and meet the local hiking plan for the following day.

Day 5: Udzungwa forest trek and return to Dar

Take a guided walk in Udzungwa. The Sanje Waterfalls route is scenic but includes steep, uneven sections that may become slippery after rain. After the hike, begin the drive back toward Dar es Salaam. Do not schedule a tight same-evening departure without assessing trail and road timings.

Who should reconsider the hike?

Travellers with knee injuries, balance problems or limited walking fitness should discuss an easier route or a wildlife-only alternative before payment. Forest conditions can be physically demanding even on a clear day.

Packing across different environments

Bring light safari clothing, a sun hat, closed walking shoes with grip, a small daypack, rain protection and enough drinking water. Ask about trail permits, guided walking and any boat activity in the written itinerary.

What is included in the safari package

Ground transport, local guides, planned game drives, hiking permits/guide, lodging, meals and boat safari only if itemised.

The confirmed proposal identifies each paid-for service separately, including the number of nights, meal plan, transport basis and park fees.

What is not included

Flight costs, visas, insurance, optional activities, gratuities and any equipment or extras not in the quotation.

Items not clearly shown as included should be treated as additional costs until we clarify them in writing.

Price and booking: what changes the quotation

The total depends on travel dates, number of guests, accommodation availability, vehicle arrangement, park charges and any requested flights or add-ons. We do not publish an invented fixed price for an itinerary with variable costs.

Tell us your dates, group size, starting location, preferred accommodation level and any children’s ages. We can then explain the options and quote the services you actually need.

Before confirming your booking

Please review the exact itinerary, travel times, nightly accommodation, cancellation conditions, transport details and any essential dietary or accessibility requirements. Wildlife sightings and seasonal movement cannot be guaranteed.

Common Questions

Is the Sanje Waterfalls trek easy?
It is a real hike with climbs and potentially slippery paths, rather than a flat nature walk.
Can children take part?
It depends on their age, stamina and current trail conditions. Discuss this when requesting the quote.
Is the Nyerere boat safari included?
Only if it is itemised in the final proposal; it also depends on local safe operating conditions.
How long is the Nyerere–Mikumi transfer?
It can occupy much of the day. Time depends on route, weather, road conditions and lodge locations.
Can I finish in Zanzibar?
Yes with a suitable connection via Dar es Salaam, but the final travel day needs sufficient margin.
