From Tanzania’s wildlife parks to Zanzibar’s coast
A Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday puts two different parts of the country into one trip. On the mainland, days revolve around game drives in places such as Tarangire, Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Zanzibar brings a slower rhythm, with beaches, Stone Town and time to rest after early safari mornings. The connection between them usually involves a domestic flight or an airport transfer, so the order matters.
Do not try to fit a full northern safari and a worthwhile island stay into too few days. Every flight and lodge move uses part of the holiday. If you only have a short window, choose fewer parks and stay longer in one beach area. If you have more time, a Serengeti stay followed by several nights on Zanzibar can give both wildlife days and time to enjoy the coast.

How many days should you reserve for each part?
Count the days lost to connections before deciding how to split the holiday. A flight from the safari region to Zanzibar may use most of an afternoon once you include transfers and check-in. If you stay only one night on the island, you may leave before having a proper beach day. For a short trip, it is often better to reduce one mainland stop and protect two or three quiet island nights rather than constantly moving.
For a five-day mainland safari, Serengeti and Ngorongoro can be included when transfers are planned carefully. A shorter safari might stay closer to Arusha with Tarangire and the crater. Adding too many safari locations can take away the Zanzibar days you hoped would feel restful.
Safari first or Zanzibar first?
Safari first is often ideal when you want the more active days early and a slower finish on the beach. Zanzibar first may work better when flights land directly on the island or when you have a scheduled safari departure. There is no universal correct order.
Before paying deposits, compare the dates of your international flights, domestic safari connection and hotel check-in. An overnight near the airport can sometimes be more sensible than rushing directly from a long flight to a game drive.

An example nine-day safari and beach itinerary
This example uses a road safari in northern Tanzania, then a domestic flight onward to Zanzibar. It is not a confirmed flight schedule.
Day 1 — Arrive in Arusha
Transfer to your hotel, recover from the flight and meet your safari planner. Keep the arrival evening simple, especially after a long international flight. You can check the next day's route with the guide before packing a small day bag for safari drives.
Day 2 — Tarangire National Park
Enjoy the first wildlife drive and overnight around the park corridor. Take time around the river and woodland rather than constantly moving from one wildlife report to another. The evening is spent at the booked lodge or camp on the route toward the next park.
Day 3 — Continue toward Serengeti
Drive through the Ngorongoro highlands to Serengeti; this is a long road day with viewing on arrival as practical. Crossing the highlands takes a significant part of the day. The first Serengeti viewing depends on when the vehicle enters the park, the road conditions and the distance to camp.
Day 4 — Serengeti game drives
Use a full day for wildlife viewing rather than changing accommodation. A whole day without an accommodation change is worth protecting. You can start early, return for a rest or keep a packed lunch, depending on the guide's plan and your interests.
Day 5 — Ngorongoro area
Return toward the highlands and overnight near the crater or Karatu. The route out of Serengeti passes through substantial highland country. You may see wildlife on the way, but most of the afternoon should be treated as onward travel.
Day 6 — Ngorongoro Crater / onward arrangements
Visit the crater, then overnight in the appropriate town for your confirmed flight connection. A tight onward same-day flight is not assumed. Crater visits have fixed entry procedures and practical time limits. The next airport should be chosen only after checking how long the return road journey will take.
Day 7 — Fly to Zanzibar
Transfer to the airport and fly to the island; continue to your beach hotel. The island's airport transfer and beach-hotel drive are separate from the flight itself. Arriving late may mean that the beach stay effectively starts the next morning.
Day 8 — Zanzibar beach or optional tour
Enjoy beach time, snorkeling or a pre-booked spice or Stone Town experience according to weather and interest. A free day is often more welcome than another long excursion after the safari. If you choose a marine activity, it depends on sea conditions and the services that have been booked.
Day 9 — Departure
Transfer to Zanzibar Airport at the correct time for your international flight. Leave time for the transfer from your actual beach area; Zanzibar's north and east coasts are not beside the airport. Packing and checkout should be organised around the confirmed flight schedule.
Choose the right Zanzibar area for your holiday
Our nine-day outline shows one reasonable split between parks and island time. It is not the only answer. Couples planning a honeymoon, families with younger children and travellers who love full-day game drives may each prefer a different balance.
Tides differ by location, especially on the east coast. Choose your hotel for your activities rather than selecting a beach solely from photos.
What affects the full package cost
Mainland park fees, safari duration, private vehicle, fly-in transfers and the type of Zanzibar hotel are the biggest variables. A two-night premium beachfront room can cost more than several nights in a simple inland lodge. Air connections and baggage limits can change the total significantly.
