Dry Season: June to October

This is the most popular time for wildlife viewing across northern Tanzania, and Lake Manyara reflects that. Vegetation is lower and less dense, making animals significantly easier to spot — particularly elephants and lions in the woodland zones. Wildlife concentrates around the lake shore and permanent pools. Road conditions inside the park are at their firmest and most comfortable. The dry season coincides with the peak safari season region-wide, so the park entrance can be busier, particularly on weekends.

Green Season: November to March

The two rainy periods — short rains in November and December, long rains from March through May — transform the landscape. The groundwater forest becomes dense and vivid green, and migratory bird species arrive in large numbers. Flamingo concentrations on the lake are often at their most spectacular during this window. General game viewing requires more patience as animals spread out, but the scenery is at its most dramatic and the park is considerably quieter. Prices are typically lower. The road from Moshi remains paved all the way to the park gate.

Shoulder Period: January to February

The brief dry spell between the two rainy seasons is often underrated. Skies are frequently clear — which means excellent views of both Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru on the drive — wildlife is active, and the park is less busy than the June to October peak. This can also coincide with wildebeest and zebra calving on the surrounding plains, which draws predator activity.

The route from Moshi passes through Arusha, which can be congested during morning rush hour (roughly 7:30–9:00 AM on weekdays).
